Made in both a 27.5 inch and 29 inch option, the Enve M640s are for the plus style of riding since the 40mm internal rim width will accommodate tires between 2.7 inch and 3.2 inch. It is a design intended to allow you to run them at as low a tire pressure as you like without having to worry about pinch flats. Enve’s designers have focused a great deal of attention to reducing flats to almost nil with the M Series wheels. They’ve accomplished this by looking at how to improve the tire-rim interface by developing a wider hookless bead in addition to the wide internal rim measurement. This wide surface area helps the tire bottom out without harsh inner pressure points, hugely reducing how often you’ll suffer a snakebite flat. The rim design with the wide hookless bead also improves overall durability while allowing the rim to remain compliant, or forgiving when taking big, hand shattering hits.
Trail riding perhaps demands the most from its equipment since it is not all about descending and durability, nor about climbing and keeping everything super lightweight. A balance must be found between these two objectives, which can seem even mutually exclusive. But that’s where the Enve M Series, and especially the M640s excel since they are incredibly durable carbon rims that still manage to be light enough to feel fun and even flickable on those technical uphill sections. One way Enve has managed to square that circle is by molding the rims to include the spoke and valve holes. When those openings are woven into the fabric of the rim, it allows Enve to use less material while retaining the stiffness and durability. When you drill your holes, you need to lay much more material at the hole points so that the action of drilling doesn’t compromise the rim structure.

So even though these are seriously burly wheels, you can still get a pair weighing as little as 1600g in a 27.5 inch wheels and 1689g in 29 inch, depending on the hub you choose.
