2018 Transition Smuggler Carbon
If you looked initially at the aluminum Smuggler and wished it was exactly the same geometry, but with a lighter carbon build, then you will be super excited to see that the Transition Smuggler Carbon is now not a dream but a reality.
Knocking a touch over a kilo off the whole build, the new Smuggler Carbon will give you the same amazingly joyful geometry and suspension combination while dropping that couple of pounds you maybe put on yourself over Christmas. Transition want all their bikes to be crazy fun first, and high performance incidentally. And you get that with the Smuggler Carbon, where you will be having such a blast, you will hardly realize that you are able to do tougher trails faster than you ever have been before.
It takes the same 120mm rear travel and 140mm at the front of the alloy Smuggler, and marries it to the Speed Balanced Geometry, or SBG, of the frame. With SBG, Transition have balanced the demand for an ultra-long reach along with a slack head angle but then did not ignore the need to be able to maneuver the bike over tight trails. Essentially, SBG lengthens the wheelbase while reducing the offset of the fork and shortening the stem. That combined with the steep seat tube angle means that the rider will be in a great position for climbing in addition to being able to descend like a demon. And with the GiddyUp 2.0 suspension design, you will be amazed that there isn’t more than 120mm of travel back there. It will feel bottomless and give you the traction and control to get you through the gnarliest trails.
The Horst link 4-bar design uses sealed Enduro Max bearings that have more load capacity than standard radial bearings for smoother functioning under greater loads. The Smuggler Carbon also makes use of the Boost spaced rear dropout for that added element of durability and traction. The 29 inch wheels with capacity up to 2.4 inch tires will also add to that feeling of endless grip.
Molded rubber protection for your downtube and chainstay will make sure that unexpected strikes or a bit of chain slap won’t damage this carbon frame you have been waiting so long to buy. And the 73mm threaded bottom bracket will offer solid transfer of your pedal power, and make maintenance much easier, while freeing you from any BB squeak you might expect from press fit. Then the ISCG05 tabs will mean you can install a chain guide, for this 1X specific Smuggler Carbon.
You can count on fitting a full sized water bottle inside the main triangle, which will be great for those hot summer rides deep in the backcountry. The Transition Smuggler Carbon will be the perfect 29er trail bike that can go anywhere while you have tons of fun carving some lines with your buddies.
