2018 Transition Ripcord
As much as you may like to wax poetic to your kids about how hard it was for you when you were a kid mucking around on old bikes, you’ll get a ton more fun out of seeing how great your kids get at bike handling once you buy them a shredder of their own. The Transition Ripcord is the type of mountain bike that will give your child even more confidence when riding local trails, and enhance his or her skillset ahead of moving up to full-sized trail bikes.
This is that rare animal: a full suspension bike designed for kids. It will suit your kid and encourage bigger rides to improve all skills and fitness. Your kids will very quickly want to start accompanying you on your long Saturday rides, and with the Ripcord, they will have the perfect trail machine. The 24 inch wheels with a maximum tire clearance for 2.5 inch tires will give them great rollover to get through rough patches, while still offering the sort of easy leverage and agility that will accommodate little arms. The 67° head angle will help with the handling, while the short 381mm chainstays will also make it easy to maneuver and flick around the trails.
The Ripcord has been given an aluminum frame to keep it light enough for those XC trails and fire road rides that require some climbing, while being sturdy enough for those trip to the bike park when they may want to practice some jumping. The 100mm travel for the fork and a 100mm RockShox Monarch R rear shock will help them get the hang of how to make the best use of their suspension set up, and still be able to stand up to their shredding efforts once they have a go at a trail run or two. And the rest of the design has received the usual attention to detail from Transition.
Keeping in mind that maintenance will be important, all cable routing is external, which will give you a good opportunity to show your youngsters how best to care for his or her own bike. With the 73mm bottom bracket, you kid can learn how sweet and simple the threaded bottom bracket really is. As with all Transition bikes, this frame doesn’t accommodate front derailleurs, and if you go with the full bike and the SRAM groupset, your little ripper will be enjoying some of the nicest shifting experience in off road riding with a 30 tooth chainring and an 11-36 at the rear to ensure all gear options that a tough day out in the hills will require. With capacity for up to 160mm rotors, you can count on the braking being first rate.
The Transition Ripcord comes in one size, and has been designed to suit riders from 3’8” up to 5’, and if your kid is between 4’4” and 4’6”, they reckon that will just about be the ideal height. So gear up and head to the hills with the whole family ready to rip.
