2019 Transition Patrol Carbon

Though we’re all in this game because we love pushing ourselves on the gnarliest downhills, the flipside of enduro racing or all mountain riding is that we gotta get back up the mountains too. Most of the time at least. The best trails invariably are the furthest from the lifts or funiculars. So it’s a good idea to have a bike that climbs as well as it descends, which is exactly what you will get with the Transition Patrol Carbon.

This frame is an all carbon construction including the carbon rocker arm, which will help shed a serious amount of weight – up to a kilo depending on the size and build. As mountain bikers, we’ve basically had to grow up with a “grams, schgrams” type of attitude, more because it was easier and cheaper to scoff at weight weenies than because we had any real prejudice against lightweight materials. We just didn’t want to compromise durability for weight savings. And that is definitely not something you need to worry about here. The folks at Transition are just as keen to smash it down a mountain as you are.

The Alu version of the Patrol is proof of just how much these guys want to make a perfectly balanced, durable and above all super fun ride. Now with this carbon incarnation, they have refined their kinematics ever-so-slightly to ensure a superior ride quality whether you are counting on low speed agility while climbing or confidence-inducing stability at high speeds on steep descents.

Transition have figured out how to balance the ultra-long reach and slack head angle with the need to be able to maneuver the bike over tight trails. They manage this because their Speed Balanced Geometry (SBG) offers a slacker head tube angle to combine with a newly reduced offset fork standard, preventing the front wheel from being too far in front of the rider. That helps with control as well as keeping the traction consistent at the front end.

Then they updated their kinematics with the new GiddyUp 2.OHH suspension design to offer a wider sag range, increase sensitivity for small bumps and improve pedaling efficiency. The design forgoes lockout when climbing so that you can get the benefit of the traction the suspension will offer without losing the pedaling efficiency you need since it’s been specifically tuned for the suspension to have a moderate amount of chain growth, which is highest at the sag point and decreasing deeper into the travel. Get the bite you need out of your tires to keep chugging up the steepest pitches.

The Patrol has 160mm rear/170mm front travel. With Boost spacing on these 27.5 inch wheels, you can run up to 2.8 inch tires and take full advantage of the intelligent suspension. The Patrol Carbon also comes with ISCG05 tabs to accommodate a chain guide. You’ll get internal cable routing for the drivetrain and the dropper post, while the brakes have external routing for ease of maintenance. You can always count on the Transitions practicality with the 73mm threaded bottom bracket. Transition have committed to the 1X way of life, so there is no front derailleur mount if you are considering building one up on your own. And since it comes in four sizes from S to XL, you’ll likely find a frame that will accommodate you no matter your size.
