2017 Moots Frosthammer
Even if you don’t have plans anytime soon to ride across Antarctica, the Moots Frosthammer is sure to get some regular play in your rotation. If you live in a part of the world with a cold, snowy, long winter, the Frosthammer could transform your winter training routine. Say goodbye to that gym membership. And even if you are among those living in the milder climes, this would be a super fun bike for some cross fit training, for some beach combing or just for some dorking off with your friends on the backtrails.
All Moots bikes are first and foremost all about fun, and the Frosthammer is no different, though you may be lucky enough to live in a particularly enlightened cycling community where they actually have some fat tire bike races. Moots calls it a “snow floater” and no wonder since you can fit 26 inch fat wheels with up to 4.8 inch tires on the Frosthammer. Alternatively you can build it up to be more of a trail bike with a difference by having 29 inch wheels and 3.0 inch tires. And if you really want to tackle some seriously rough trails, you can still fit a suspension fork that will accommodate those wheel dimensions.
Made from the classics US-produced titanium tubing, the Frosthammer has a special ride quality that only ti can offer, while still keeping the weight down and the acceleration up – two things which most fat bikes couldn’t really claim. It handles so well, you will swear you are riding a conventional hardtail, but you will be able to go so much further and deeper into the depths of winter than you ever could dream on your standard 29er. Available in four standard sizes or customizable with Moots, you will certainly be able to get comfortable enough on this baby that you will take the slipperiest, iciest descents in your stride.
Since the Frosthammer only ships as a frame, that means you can build it up exactly as you would like. It can work either as a 1X or 2X set up and uses post mount disc brakes. All cable routing is external which frankly makes it a breeze to set up and maintain. There is an option to go with internal dropper post routing, and if you want to turn this into a multi-day adventurer, rack eyelets and a third water bottle cage mount would also be customizable options.
If you have been poo-pooing the idea of a fat bike because it all looks so tank-like slow, then do yourself a favor and give the Moots Frosthammer a chance. Whether to extend your winter riding options or just have a ton of fun on the trails, this is a fat bike that will handle like a mountain bike and rollover obstacles like a monster truck.
