2021 Knolly Delirium
Whether you are lucky enough to have a selection of mountain bikes for your various off road adventures, or are looking for a thrasher that can handle the gnarliest downhills while still being fun swooshing a flow trail or bike park, then the Knolly Delirium will be a fantastic way to go.
The folks at Knolly call it “beyond classification” and once you swing a leg over it, you’ll know what they mean. Burly enough for the steepest DH trails, playful enough for the bike park, and nimble enough to tackle the XC fire roads along the way, the Delirium really can be that do everything type of rig we all are searching for. It pairs a 27.5 inch wheelset with 180mm front travel and 175mm in the rear, to offer the type of versatility that will encourage you to take on all sorts of different trails. The frame has been made from 6066 hydroformed aluminum, which does the great balancing act of keeping the weight low and the durability high. By hydroforming the tubes, they are able to dose out the thickness of each tube section so that those areas that require reinforcement can have it, but excess material need not be added, which would end up increasing the weight.
For the suspension system, the Delirium continues to work with the Knolly Fourby4 suspension linkage, which they developed in-house. Taking a leaf out of the Formula 1 strut-style suspension design, the double linkage allows them to fine tune each bike for the type of trails it’ll be hitting. The lower linkage controls the rear wheel axle path, and the upper linkage controls the shock progression keeping the suspension progressive and efficient. Knolly’s Fourby4 suspension has been developed specifically to require little to no compromise among the four most important performance metrics of suspension: pedaling efficiency, traction, rear brake interaction with the rear shock, and rear shock progression. And it will all function extremely smooth since they have developed pivot bushings rotating on dual row angular contact bearings held together by bespoke titanium pivot hardware and custom oversized CNC’d axles.
The design also means that they can combine it with the forward mounted seat tube, to keep the seat tube uninterrupted, which means that you can have a 175mm dropper post in there, no problem. It also means they can keep the chainstays short at 431.5mm while still offering plenty of rear wheel clearance. They can then stick with the super reliable and easy to maintain 73mm threaded bottom bracket shell. The internal cable routing will keep the cables from rattling irritatingly over rough trails, and keep the bike looking sleek with clean lines.
Interestingly, Knolly has made the Delirium 1X specific, likely figuring with the advent of 12-speed 1X drivetrains, there is hardly any need to go with a 2X on modern types of trails anymore. And the pretty slack geometry combined with the suspension that is begging to be tested in the toughest terrain, you are going to be seeking out the steepest chutes you can possibly find. The Knolly Delirium will be that super fun ride whether you’re at the bike park, freeride or tackling some Alpine length downhills.
