2020 Evil Bikes The Wreckoning
Sometimes we think it would be terrible to have to be a bike designer and think up the newest, greatest thing. How many times can you keep going back to the well? Well, the designers at Evil Bikes have proved to us once again that they are a long way from running out of ideas about how to make an absolute badass mountain bike. The Wreckoning has been updated to offer the keen all mountain and downhiller a machine that will enhance every aspect of their rides.
As with all their bike updates, Evil Bikes has taken a ground-up approach when tackling what they wanted to do with the latest version of The Wreckoning. First hint of their radicalness is that the whole geometry has been revamped. But don’t let that scare you because they have worked a ton of versatility into their setups, so if you loved The Wreckoning before, you’ll be crazy about it now. For one thing, they have optimized it for both a 160mm and 170mm fork. And then they are still working with the classic DELTA suspension system with the flip chip design that adjusts the bike’s geometry according to individual needs. The DELTA system has been slightly tweaked with updated shapes and lines that match the new design language of the Wreckoning.
Next, they looked at increasing the seat tube and head tube angles, so that in a size medium, you’ll be looking at a 77° in the low, and 76.5° in x-low for the seat tube, while on the earlier Wreckoning, they had 74.8° and 73.9° seat tube angles in a medium. Similarly, the head tube angle has been steepened by nearly a degree, from 66.1° to 65.2° in the low setting of this latest version. The idea is to get the pedal-friendly pop of the Following and Offering while sticking like glue to the serious DH chops that the Wreckoning has always claimed. You’ll be getting 166mm in rear travel, as opposed to the 161mm of the earlier Wreckoning. To get that balance right between climbing facility and DH gravitas, they revised the leverage curve of the suspension, first by looking at the high-end leverage to maintain that supple, efficient pedal stroke. But as the leverage decreases slowly through the mid stroke, it provides a ton of support to push against while the end stroke sees the lowest leverage. All of a sudden you’ll think the Wreckoning has 200mm rear travel instead of 166mm.
That longer reach that results from the geo tweaks will get you into the prime position for tackling your gnarliest descents. And the addition of SuperBoost + 157 rear spacing to increase frame stiffness so that you’ll never have to think twice about sending it. They have also spec’d the 29 inch wheels with big rubber: 2.5 inch up front and 2.3 inch in the rear to find that right mix of traction when you want to rail the corners. And if you are building up your own frame, you can get up to 2.6 inch tires on the back if you are all about enhancing grip.
Do you need to hear anything else to sell you on this bike? Probably not, but Evil designers have also included fully internal cable routing to protect all those lines and keep the look super slick. Rubber sound-cancelling chainstay mounds make sure you are only hearing your own whoosh down the trail. With design features like the wider pivot and oversized hardware, this is a bike that has been designed to give no flex and last a lifetime.
