2017 VYNL Cyclocross
It’s funny how trends work. For a while aluminum was the new best thing in bike construction, until it wasn’t and tastes moved one to something else. But technology stops moving or developing, and that’s a great thing. That’s why when you buy a Vynl cyclocross bike expertly handmade from 7005 butted aluminum, you will be getting as balanced, as perfect a ride as you could ever hope for from a carbon frame, but at a much more reasonable price.
And when we say handmade, we don’t just mean any handmade. These babies are tig welded by Frank "The Welder" Wadelton, who is nothing short of a legend, particularly in the mountain bike sector. He has made bikes since the early ‘70s and for some of the greatest brands as well as riders. So there is no question your nascent frame is in good hands. Then they have taken the care to choose each tubeset according to the frame size, which will mean that each size across the range will exhibit the same balanced qualities. Most of the time bike manufactures start with the median size and work out towards the extremities, often without taking the trouble to account for the different forces that a 6’4” cyclist will exert compared to a 5’2” rider. That won’t be a problem here, though.
As for the nitty gritty, Vynl believes in pure, no-nonsense bike designs. So you’ll get unabashed external cable routing throughout, and if you are inclined to be your own mechanic, you will heave a sigh of relief at that decision. You’ll also get a nice old traditional and exceptionally functional English threaded bottom bracket with a 68mm shell. The frame is compatible with a 27.2 seatpost that will give you that perfect amount of spring in your butt-step and will be a piece of cake to find exactly what you want. The seat tube accommodates a 32mm clamp-on front derailleur, though you can also roll with a 1x if that’s your preference. The 44mm head tube will work with Chris King Inset 7 and Cane Creek 40 series headsets, which are about as good as you can get. And the frame can work with 140 as well as 160 rotors, if you want some mega braking power.
You can run 700x40c tires, which will be sufficient to get you through the muddiest courses, or even some multiday gravel adventures if your tastes run in that direction. And for anyone looking to use this bike away from the hour long cross races, you’ll be really pleased that Vynl has added two bottle mounts since riding anything longer than a cross race will definitely require some hydration, and who wants to have to rely on a water backpack exclusively?
The Vynl Cyclocross bike comes in a selection of five colors, from reserved Gunmetal Grey to vibrant Wild Fuchsia. But for an additional charge, Vynl will customize your paint jobs. They want you to love looking at it as much as you will love riding it.
