2019 Pinarello Grevil



Since Pinarello is not the type of company to do things by halves, they have hit the ground running with their first official foray into gravel oriented bikes with the Pinarello Grevil. And they have been considerate enough to release it in two versions, the Plus with the top of the line carbon, and this the regular Grevil with slightly less exalted and expensive carbon.

They use the Torayca T700 UD carbon fiber, and anyone with a Dogma F8 will be able to tell you that this is far from a disappointing material to use. It just helps them keep the price down to a more reasonable level, one where maybe you’ll have enough change to get a second set of wheels to make the most of the Grevil’s design features. That’s because Pinarello has designed it to work with both 700c and 650b wheel sizes. So you can run a 700c with a 25 or 28mm road tire if you want to keep the rotational weight down and stick primarily to the road. Or you can go up to 42mm tires with a 700c wheel for those more gravel heavy rides. And then if you really want to get chunky and go deep into the backwoods, you can use a 650b or 27.5” wheel with a mountain bike tire up to 2.1” wide. So with two sets of wheels, your ride options are almost limitless.

And even if a different carbon is used compared to the Grevil+, the same frame design comes with the Grevil, which means that they have adapted and enhanced their use of asymmetric designs for the frame. They focus on the rear triangle with the dropped drivetrain side chainstay, which they use to increase the space for tire clearance, while keeping the q-factor similar to a road bike without having to lengthen the stays. The asymmetry extends to the front triangle where the downtube and the bottom bracket are also asymmetric to deal with the differing forces your pedaling will inflict on drivetrain and non-drivetrain sides. This is something that Pinarello has perfected over the years, and will help you feel like all your power is reaching the road.

The geometry is the same as well, where there is a slightly shorter reach and higher stack, which is generally the way gravel and endurance bikes are made these days, but it’s not so extreme that you will feel like you are riding a mountain bike with dropbars. They want it to be comfortable for long hours in the saddle, but even more importantly, it still needs to be fun to ride on smooth tarmac, and descend really well. The Grevil is and does all that thanks to the fine touch of the Pinarello designers. Adding the Onda Fork and Flexstays in the rear work together with the geometry to ensure long hours of comfort over even the roughest double track.

Off road or on, the Grevil will be fast. It even incorporates the aero tube shapes and Fork Flaps used on the Dogma road line to enhance the aero efficiency. You may never be doing any gravel time trials, but who is going to scoff at some free speed when they can get it? The Grevil also comes with internal cable routing to keep things neat and clean. On the flip side, you’ll also have access to a third water bottle cage with bottle bosses on the underside of the down tube for those long expeditions into the forests when you won’t be certain where the next refueling spot will be. And if you are planning on having it set up as a 1x, the front derailleur hanger is neatly removable.

The Pinarello Grevil will be the perfect way for you to get your off road adventuring done without giving up your road bike sensibilities. It’s a great option for anyone looking to stay fast no matter the terrain.
