2017 Pinarello FCX Cross
Jump into the cross season with a huge advantage when you are astride the Pinarello FCX Cross carbon cyclocross racing bike. Offering a race-ready, lightweight responsiveness that will be perfect for tight cross courses, the FCX Cross from Pinarello will give you the confidence you need to plow through the sand pits and hop the barriers with aplomb.
Pinarello has taken inspiration from their Dogma K when designing the FCX. The Dogma K is their rough and ready road bike that is used by the Sky professional team when racing Paris-Roubaix. So it has to be tough, light, quick and…did we say tough? Since those are all attributes that a top range cyclocross bike needs to have as well, it only made sense for the designers to take their cues from the road Dogma K and apply those things that fit for serious cross racing as well. So the T600 carbon has been given a layup that will keep the weight down while ensuring the acceleration is enhanced by the stiffness thanks in large part to Pinarello’s use of an asymmetric frame design to increase the efficiency of each pedal stroke. And then is will still offer the type of compliance that will make 60 minutes over rough rooted tracks a lot more manageable. The Onda fork and slightly waved seatstays will also do their bit in keeping the ride comfortable. And then little tweaks that set it apart from the Dogma K come in the form of a rounder top tube to improve how comfortable the bike is to shoulder when you have to race up a set of stairs.
Another difference between the FCX Cross and the Dogma is that the FCX Cross comes only in a disc brake option, and that only makes sense since disc brakes have taken control of the cross racing scene over the past several seasons, while there are still a lot of naysayers on the road circuit. But racing cross, or even riding over gravel and muddy woodsy trails, really begs for the superior and predictable stopping power you are guaranteed with disc brakes. The frame is designed for flat mount disc brakes and can accommodate up to 160mm rotor diameters, which will offer plenty of braking power even to the most burly riders. They have also employed their RAD System which they also use on the K10-S Disk which makes sure the chainstay is robust enough to cope with the braking forces, increasing the overall integrity of the frame structure.
Coming with a tire clearance of 35mm, a lot of people might also like the looks of the FCX as a great gravel grinding option, which it certainly could be if you like your geometry to be pretty sporty in general. The internal cable routing can accommodate both electric and mechanical groupsets while helping the frame look sleek and clean. The Pinarello FCX Cross is available in four sizes and a couple color options. Lightweight and responsive, it will be an ideal bike for the seasoned cross racer or roadie with ambitions to upgrade winter training regimes.
