2017 Moots Baxter 29
There is something so endearing and revealing about the fact that the folks at Moots have named this particular bike the Baxter. They have in fact named it after one of the company dogs, Baxter, who sadly went to meet his maker in 2017. But Baxter had been a big part of the company for a long time; they couldn’t have hoped for a more loyal employee or friend. He was a very good boy. And once you ride the Baxter 29, you will see that this is a bike that has all the best qualities of all the best dogs. It is the bicycle embodiment of durability, loyalty, and balls-to-the wall enthusiasm.
This is a bike that will never make you feel like you have made a mistake. Take it wherever you want, ride it hard, on rough trails or for coffee rides, the Baxter 29 will think it’s all amazing. Could your handling skills use some work? The Baxter won’t care. It will still love you. It will even be so great, people will come up to you to talk about it, and ask what’s its name.
But the Baxter 29 is much more than a conversation piece. It is the ultimate titanium adventure bike. Created to make your bikepacking life so much easier and more fun, the Baxter 29 can be whatever you want it to be. Developed for 29 inch wheels with a frame clearance of up to 2.25 inch tires, it has a geometry that is designed to be relaxed without slouchy; you can fit either drop bars or flat bars according to your taste and riding style. If you are a roadie looking to push your way into the backcountry, then the Baxter will give you the burly ability to tackle most XC trail situations, even the ones you accidentally end up having to ride those times you have lost your way. But it will still ride and handle well enough to be fun and fast on hardpack and tarmac roads.
The Baxter has been designed to accommodate both a rigid fork as well as a suspension fork with up to 100mm of travel. So you can really ride this baby from your front door, roll comfortably on the paved city roads till you hit your trails outside of town, and then confidently take it as deep into the off-road woodsy trails as you like. You can build it up with a convention 2X groupset to keep that road-worthy edge or go with a one-by for seriously mountainous adventures where you’ll really want a wide range of gears to get you through the steep bits.
Moots wants this to be as versatile as your cycling routes demand. As with all Moots frames, they have size-specific tubes and geometry so that you can count on the stiffest performance with the lowest possible weight; no wasted material adding unnecessary heft. As a bike begging to be taken out wide and far, the Baxter has rack eyelets to give you the option to pack as much as you want, and fender eyelets so that you can feel comfortable taking this out in all weather conditions.
The Moots Baxter 29 is really a bike you won’t want to leave home, kenneled for eight hours while you’re at work. It will get you dreaming about long, fun adventures hanging out at the weekend.
