2020 Devinci Hatchet Carbon GRX LTD Bike
If you remember 2009 when a certain road racer named Lance Armstrong headed to the Leadville 100 with a support “domestique” teammate using drop bars on a mountain bike - Travis Brown, we’re looking at you - then you’ll probably remember how odd that looked back then. But honestly, considering the type of terrain the 100 covers, with tons of fire roads and things that cater at least as much to drop handlebars, it did make a certain amount of sense. And the spirit of the mountain biker who wants to hit the roads at speed, the Devinci Hatchet Carbon would be an ideal addition to any bike collection.
As the name implies, the Hatchet Carbon is made from a high quality carbon fiber that is intended to keep it light while offering long term durability. With the fairly long wheelbase and the suggested shorter front-end set-up, the Hatchet Carbon harkens back to the mountain bike handling that the Devinci designers wanted to approximate. So it will feel extremely stable on the downhills, but keep that level of responsiveness that will help you pop out of tight corners. That’s because the wheelbase is between 102.2cm and 107.3cm, depending on which size you have, which encourages a planted feeling not dissimilar to the modern geo of a mountain bike. A tall headtube and spec’d shorter stem will then offer that intuitive handling, allowing the bike to flow through the rough stuff as easily as if it were smooth tarmac. The precise handling will be helped by the front-end stiffness the carbon layup promotes.
But don’t think this will be a bone shaking affair. Devinci uses what they call a Dual Core Fusion carbon layup that keeps the acceleration responsive, but the ride feel comfortably compliant. All of that sounds great for the trails, but the geometry and frame design is also intended to keep you happy on the road. So you have the smaller rear triangle as a result of the seatstays hitting lower on the seat tube, keeping the rear end fast to respond to all accelerations.
The Devinci Hatchet Carbon is the type of bike that has resulted from the growing demand to be able to take your bike anywhere you want to go. Assisting the wide variety of situations where it will excel, from roads to trails and back again, that Hatchet Carbon can fit up to 40mm knobby tires so you can get deep into the woods, though the spec’d 32mm will be excellent for most gravel routes you could be using, and even cover your needs for a cyclocross race. There is also compatibility for a internally routed dropper post, if you intend using this bad boy in more extreme situations. Similarly, you can fit some mud guards on it if you want to use if for those sloppy winter base mile rides. And the frame also is compatible with a rear rack if you have a notion of using this as your backpacking bike.
Available in several complete build options, the Devinci Hatchet Carbon will offer the type of high performance over a variety of terrains that will make it your go-to bike for just about every ride that doesn’t require a huge drop-off capability. Expand your explorations with the Hatchet Carbon.
