2021 Basso Volta Apex 1 Bike
The e-bike bandwagon is one we can jump on with huge enthusiasm especially when you have such a slickly designed option like the Basso Volta. Available as a road bike as well as a gravel bike option, the Volta can get you to where you want to go.
Cycling is all about having fun and exploring, but most of us don’t have 8 hours a day to devote to our rides. But we still want to get out and enjoy the far reaches of our bikeable world, which is where something like the Volta with its Polini motor will be a huge help. And it’s a neat combo since Basso is based in northern Italy close to Treviso, and Polini is based in nearby Bergamo. Basso has bucked the trend where bike manufacturers are either choosing Germany’s Fazua or Spain’s eBikemotion systems for their dropbar e-bike offerings. Instead they have partnered with someone close to home and consequently have developed a very slick looking, lightweight setup.
Basso designers wanted to ensure that there wouldn’t be any trace of clunkiness in the design, so they started with a 3K Torayca HMCF T700-MR60 carbon frame construction and then married it to the Polini E-P3 motor and battery design that places the battery unobtrusive and easily accessible in the down tube while the motor settles neatly into the appropriately beefy bottom bracket. Weighing just 2.8kg, the Polini motor can still inject 250 Watts of power into your pedaling, making it a minimal weight compromise for a maximum power improvement.
With a 500Wh battery and the same geometry as the Basso Palta, the Volta certainly is ready to help you put in some long hours on the bike. Basso says the pedal assist feature will last a good 220 kilometers or roughly 135 miles when you run it in the level 1. Level 1 offers a 30% increase in power, based on a rider being between 60 and 80kg and riding at a cadence of between 60 and 80 RPM. Level 2 will inject a 60% increase and last up to 180km; level 3 will give you 120% boost and last for 150km; level 4 will give you a 250% boost and last up to 100km; and finally level 5 will give you a whopping 400% boost and last an impressive 85km. That sounds like a super fun way to spend the afternoon!
With capacity to support 45c tires, the Volta certainly can offer the type of comfort that long road and gravel rides require. They have also developed a clever seat clamping system that uses an integrated 3 clamp design with the added benefit of a vibration dampening rubber insert between the tube and post.
The Basso Volta e-bike is an excellent option for stress-free two-wheeled rambling. It offers fun, fantastic performance and clean looking, Italian design cues to set your ride apart from the ordinary.
