2019 Basso Fast Cross
Oftentimes names of bikes can seem a little obscure, but with the Basso Fast Cross, the use and intention are explicitly spelled out. This is a bike for fast cross racing.
Since Basso has also released a gravel-specific bike in the Palta, they have felt comfortable taking the Fast Cross to the cyclocross racing party with fewer things designed to accommodate touring rather than racing. That’s not to say this isn’t a bike that can be used and loved by a gravel grinder. Things like the water bottle bosses, which are often missing from cross racing bikes, have been included. And you can fit tires up to 35mm on it, even though 33mm is the UCI limit for races. So the Fast Cross is a bike that can also be very effectively used as a summer gravel grinder or winter training bike.
But first and foremost, it is designed to be a top quality cyclocross bike for your autumn through winter racing pleasure. The frame is a full monocoque UD carbon fiber made with Torayca TR50 and MR60. Since Basso has kept all frame manufacturing in house, they know exactly what they want to do with these materials, carefully laying up the frame so that it will offer whip-fast acceleration and rough course comfort while still remaining lightweight enough so that you can hop barriers or run up a long flight of stairs with relative ease. The sharp handling is just what you will need to navigate tight courses with competitors potentially taking your preferred lines. The tapered head tube with the integrated 1.5” headset base combine with the fork to offer stable handling that remains comfortable and protected from vibrations numbing your hands and arms.
The geometry has definitely been angled toward the aggressive setup most cross racers will be looking to go with, but considering a size 55 has a reach of 394 and a stack of 546, you won’t need to be outrageously limber to find those numbers comfortable. The flat mount disc brakes can handle up to 160mm rotors, and there is no front derailleur mount so that you can get a really clean 1x setup if you want to simplify your gears and your life.
The Basso Fast Cross is definitely a great bike for the keen cross racer, though it includes enough practical features to make sure it will be an ideal option for winter training and even summertime long distance gravel adventures.
