The Creative Solutions of the Argon 18 E-118 Tri + Disc
It’s pretty fashionable these days to criticize the UCI over all sorts of things, including limitations in frame design possibilities. But as the Argon 18 E-118 Tri + Disc proves, sometimes having limitations placed on you can encourage creativity and bold solutions.
Though a lot of manufacturers often take advantage of the fact that the UCI has no control over triathlon events to create tri-specific bikes that do not follow the design rules from the UCI, Argon 18 has seen several advantages to working within the constructs of the UCI guidelines on frame design. For one thing, keeping the tube shapes within the allowable UCI limits has forced them to think how to get as aerodynamically effective as possible without exploding the size and shape of the tubes. It also encourages them to keep the weight of the frame as low as possible, since they are using a minimum of material to get the job done. Keeping the frame so lean – just 1200g in a size medium – will really help in the long run, especially if you are in a hilly event where every ounce of weight will make a difference.
The E-118 Tri + Disc is definitely a tri bike meant for the experts. The geometry has been adapted to be even more aggressive, putting the rider significantly lower at the front, with a longer reach for a more aerodynamic position. And if you are a smaller rider, you will almost certainly be able to get the best fit in a TT bike ever. Argon 18 has updated its ONEness System that makes the bar/stem interface more aggressive than the E-118Next. The armrest stack has been lowered by 2cm and the grip position 4cm lower. These are pro-level geo numbers, which is one reason why the Astana sponsored team has been using this for their WorldTour time trials. Good thing Argon 18 did keep it UCI legal. But this will make it so much easier for riders of smaller stature who struggle to get a good aero TT position.
Uncompromising Handling of the E-118 Tri + Disc
All that long and low geo might make you worry about handling. But you don’t have to because the E-118 Tri + Disc has been designed specifically to offer excellent handling even on highly technical courses. The extreme stiffness allows for unbelievably efficient power transfer to help you get up to speed quickly out of every corner, while the overall stability of the handling will fill you with confidence. Add into the equation that the powerful disc brakes will allow you to wait until the last minute to brake, saving you valuable seconds, and you’ll quickly see all your previous personal best times tumble.
With plenty of removable storage options, you can use the Argon 18 E-118 Tri + Disc one weekend for your triathlon and then the next weekend for a road time trial that is UCI sanctioned. This is a versatile, stunningly aero triathlon bike that will be a blast to ride and race.
