Knolly Chilcotin 167: Dominating Enduro with 29er Excellence
When you are looking for a well-balanced enduro 29er that can take big hits and still climb like a beast, the Knolly Chilcotin 167 can step up to the challenge. Updated from the old Chilcotin which rolled with 26 inch wheels, the Chilcotin 167 gets burly 29 inch wheels to pair with seriously capable 167mm rear suspension and 170mm up front.
With an agility that belies its stoke-inducing size, the Knolly Chilcotin 167 will get you equally excited about your next time racing between the tape and your afternoon trip to the bike park. Using the 5th generation Fourby4 suspension system, the Chilcotin 167 offers a fully progressive curve that eats up the biggest hits without losing that feather-perfect sensitivity and Knolly’s famous mid-stroke resilience.
But if you are familiar with Knolly, you won’t be the least bit surprised by how amazing the suspension feels. Where you’ll really get excited is by how well-thought out the geometry has been. For many years now, there does seem to be a bit of blindly pushing the boundaries going on in the longer-lower-slacker geos of many mountain bike manufacturers, especially when reaching for the enduro machines. And as far as that goes, the Chilcotin is definitely updated from its former glory. But more to the point, the Knolly designers are going for longer or slacker because it’s a fad. They thought hard about how to have the suspension and geometry work together as you are riding. That’s what they are calling their dynamic geometry.
Though highly progressive, the Chilcotin’s geometry works with the frame’s size in relation to the suspension performance, which translates into a stable ride that can nevertheless flick around technical flowy courses. The geo numbers on paper may make it look and sound like a beast, the way it works in unison with the progressive suspension means that it can be nimble and predictable at the same time. Another nice touch that keeps the versatility levels high is the fact that you can adjust the geometry from a slack setting to a neutral setting, depending on what you plan on riding on any given day. It just takes a little bolt adjustment and then sliding the shock forward or back, depending on what you need. That changes the effective seat tube angle from 77.6° in the neutral setting to 76.9° for the slack. Similarly, the head tube angle changes from 64.5 (neutral) to 63.8 (slack).
Made from 6066 series hydroformed aluminum, the Chilcotin’s frame offers a comforting amount of durability without making it feel like a tank on the way up the hill. It also makes super use of the classic Knolly straight seat tube design that is so uninterrupted that you can fit a 200+mm dropper post. It’s such a special part of the frame’s characteristics that Knolly have even given it a special name: the Offset Straight Seat Tube Design. It means that you are planted super centrally in the frame, making the transition between seated pedaling and aggressive attacking pedaling way more efficient. Essentially, it allows maximum rear wheel travel while keeping the back wheel away from the seat tube under full compression.
