2017 Pinarello Dogma F8 Xlight
Just because Pinarello likes to focus on designing bikes that are all-round amazing in all categories doesn’t mean that they don’t get a kick out of trying to push the boundaries every now and then. With the Dogma F8 X-Light they have taken their Grand Tour slayer and re-positioned it for the weight weenie market.
They have accomplished this by taking a new look at the way they do the carbon layup in order to refine their asymmetric system, in order to keep the stiffness but lose the weight. They’ve successfully dropped 80 grams off the frame in a size 53, so now the frame weighs only 780 grams while the fork clocks up 340 grams. That means that Chris Froome probably has to add weights to the frame in order to get it over the UCI weight limit. It also means that you have to be at a Chris Froome race weight since Pinarello does suggest a 70 kilo or 154 pound rider weight limit for the F8 X-Light. That may seem a bit harsh for those of us who generally sit at our Christmas weight and not so much our race weight, but Pinarello is pretty candid about this being a serious bike meant for competitive situations. And since production has been limited to 200 frames worldwide, you will have to place it on special order to get yours, which will give you time to slim down if need be.
Of course, once you do swing your leg over, then you’ll be in cycling heaven. The F8 has received refining touches compared to the Dogma 65.1, such as greater emphasis on aerodynamics as well as increased lateral rigidity with improved vertical compliance. But the X-Light enjoys a new tweezer-level of attention to detail. The frame feels incredibly balanced, which keeps you confident on twisty descents and saves energy by making every pedal stroke count. The tube shapes have also received a rethink since Pinarello and their partners at Jaguar were particularly intent on improving the aero qualities of the Dogma. The wind tunnel tested aero fork has been given a splayed shape to reduce the turbulent airflow around the wheels, while the curvy Onda S-pattern has been somewhat flattened. With the down tube, seat tube, and seat stays all receiving an aero Kamm Tail design, or what Pinarello calls their Flat Back shaping, the frame not only looks like it spent a bit more time in the wind tunnel, but it is decidedly more aerodynamic than previous Dogmas with a claimed 47% improvement. Even something like the rear brake has been protected from causing drag by the monostay. And the headtube has an even more pronounced bow-of-the-boat shape to give this leading edge an airflow advantage.
The Italian threaded bottom bracket ensures that you will have a lot of crank options that will fit, and will free you from any squeaky press fit issues. The tapered 1 1/2 to 1 1/8 headset will increase strength and stability in steering. The Think 2 design makes it super easy to run a mechanical or electric groupset internal cable routing simply by switching out the cable stops going into the frame. Every frame comes with both options.
Since it is available in 13 sizes, you should be able to find the perfect fit for your height. The Pinarello Dogma F8 X-Light will become your ideal bike for those Haute Route climbing epics, and will definitely blow the minds of all your friends at your local crit series.
