2017 Pinarello Bolide
The Pinarello Bolide time trial frameset was designed in collaboration with Team Sky and Pinarello engineers to created a new standard for time trial aerodynamic drag and performance.
The Bolide has a 15% aerodynamic drag reduction over the previous Graal which won the 2012 Tour de France.
To improve the aerodynamics of the Bolide every part on the bike was examined to see how it impacts the drag. Through this extraordinary approach Pinarello was able to identify key areas to work on. First, Pinarello started with integrating the brakes into the frame, to hide the brakes from the air. These brake covers, in conjunction with the internal cable routing, significantly reduce the aerodynamic drag. Not only do they look great they also work well. Second, an integrated handlebar and stem that seamlessly integrate into the frame create optimal aerodynamics. Third, the battery and controllers are hidden inside the frame so there is no additional aerodynamic drag. Fourth, Pinarello is using new airfoil tube sections that offer the lowest aerodynamic drag in all wind conditions and in some conditions actually generate forward thrust. Last, Pinarello has a concave back on the seat tube which allows the rear wheel to sit a close as possible to the frame for optimal airflow.
Other improvements to the Pinarello Bolide include improved stiffness of the frame resulting in greater pedal power transfer over the Graal. Unlike other aerodynamic airfoils, the Bolide tube structure has been designed to optimize aerodynamics while maintaining near perfect constant stiffness. The Bolide has a tapered 1" 1/8 top bearing and 1" 1/4 bottom bearing, which gives optimal blend of aerodynamic and mechanical performance. Pinarello's asymmetric chainstays from the Dogma have carried over to the Bolide and are designed to oppose the asymmetric forces created when power is applied to the chain. Additionally, the layup of the carbon layers is designed to reinforce specifically the more stressed areas of the frame. Combined all this with Torayca 65HM1K carbon and there is a weight drop over the Graal and industry leading structural strength.
The Bolide comes with the Think2 moniker meaning it is both Electric and Mechanical compatible in the same frame. The water bottle position can be lowered towards the bottom bracket to improve aerodynamic performance. It also comes with the new BB86 to maximize stiffness. The front derailleur braze on can also be removed for a single front chainring and a special cover plate is provided to reduce aerodynamic drag. Horizontal dropouts are used to allow for the rear wheel to be moved as close to the frame as possible to minimize drag. The bottom bracket is designed to accept an SRM sensor.
To say the Bolide is special is an understatement. The Bolide is the pinnacle of everything Pinarello and Team Sky have learned combined with their pursuit for perfection. 15% aerodynamic drag reduction and a whole host of other improvements in the Bolide show innovation and Italian craftsmanship at its finest.
