Moots

Variety and individuality have always been and continue to be the focus at Moots. Each Moots product reflects this focus and years of commitment to producing the very best bicycles. Blending the feel of the road and trail into a frame takes years of experience both riding and building frames in pursuit of perfection. The Moots crew has been able to take advantage of their Rocky Mountain hideaway to build, test, and ride their ideas on local test tracks ranging from single track rock ledge drop-offs to wandering gravel farm roads to endless chip sealed highways. Whether you are a seasoned, multi-personality rider with a prized array of rides in your garage or a dedicated, single-minded traditionalist focused on one discipline, Moots proudly offers the finest titanium products made. It’s impossible to say, but no matter where you start, you end up at the same place: here. Today. And more importantly, you end up with exactly the same feeling—the elusive sense of grace and power that results from the perfect union of body and bicycle. It’s that feeling that has driven the entire Moots crew for over a quarter century. They’ve ridden thousands of miles in search of that feeling; spent thousands of hours drawing, dreaming, and designing. The result? The most comprehensive line of bicycles Moots has ever offered, from the super-hot Vamoots and Compact road frames, to the incredibly efficient and plush Zirkel, to the do-it-all-and-kick-butt-in-the-process Psychlo X, to whatever a rider can imagine with the custom road and mountain bike programs. Why so many bikes? Because Moots understands this simple fact: not everyone rides a bike exactly the same way, but everyone deserves to know the feeling. History Kent Eriksen rolled into Steamboat Springs, Colorado in July, 1975 after having toured North America and Mexico by bicycle for the two years following his high school graduation. He opened a bike shop in town a year later: Sore Saddle Cyclery. As a 21 year old, Eriksen was intrigued by the idea of a bicycle designed specifically for off-road riding. As the story goes, Eriksen was “looking for fun”, and that maxim was reflected by his first bike and eventually the company that has earned its rightful place as the world’s finest manufacturer of titanium bicycles: Moots. Practicality called for an off-road bike and in 1981 the first Moots Mountaineer—Eriksen’s personal bike—rolled out his front door. There were other mountain bikes on the market at the time, most coming from small shops in California, but Eriksen’s bike was different. “Back then, everybody else was into fillet brazing,” he says. “We were really into lugs, so we had to create a geometry that worked with lugs.” The Mountaineer featured steeper geometry than other early mountain bikes resulting in a bicycle with snappy, “fun” handling. It was just the thing for Eriksen to make his commute on. In 1983, Eriksen’s work further proved itself—this time on the race course—when a relatively unknown racer named Steve Tilford won the very first NORBA National Championships (and coincidentally, his very first mountain bike race) aboard a Moots. After only three years of existence, Moots Cycles had cemented its reputation as a builder of high quality bicycles that could win the biggest races. Nearly two decades later, in 2000, Moots sponsored Tilford again, and he began a four-year run of victories in the Masters class at the World Championships. All four gold medals were won on the exact same frame—a rarity in today’s racing scene where riders go through multiple frames a year. Now, that’s something to boast about. In 1987, the industry’s first “soft-tail” design was born: The YBB (“Why Be Beat”). This was before anybody began riding with suspension forks. The inch of travel offered a forgiving ride without all the complications associated with pivoted suspension designs. It’s no surprise that the soft-tail design went on to become perhaps the most copied suspension frame design in the history of cycling. As Moots continued to grow and face competition from other manufacturers, they sought out a niche to set themselves apart. That niche presented itself in 1991, with the creation of the first titanium Moots. When Moots was founded in 1981, the material most every small builder was using was some version of Cro-Moly steel. Brazed lugged frames led to T.I.G.-welded frames and within a few years Moots was designing the tubing we used to dial the ride of each Mountaineer made. Steel tubing continued to develop and at the same time there was improvement in seamless 3/2.5 titanium tubing. In 1991 with the birth of the YBB and the ability to purchase the correct tube sizes in seamless 3/2.5 tubing for bike manufacturing, Moots decided to give it a shot. Ironically, Eriksen had to be convinced by legendary welder Ted Leal that titanium was the way to go. Once Eriksen realized the advantages, he became an enthusiastic proponent of the exquisite grey metal. “Titanium will flex twice as far as steel without yielding,” says Eriksen. “And because there's no paint, it’s easier on the environment.” The first titanium Moots frames were finished only days before the annual Interbike trade show. As you might imagine they were a hit. Fast-forward almost two decades; Moots has evolved into an innovative design team harnessing the industry’s best titanium welders. Their titanium products continue to stand the test of time and are regarded, almost unanimously, as the best in the industry.
