Many cyclists already know Eddy Merckx' reputation for
victory. The man dubbed "The Cannibal" never let a rider
best him so long as he could help it. 525 wins in 10
years time. That's 1 professional race win per week, for
10 years. With a reputation like that, the ultimate bike
from the ultimate road racer should be focused on
victory. So what does it take to build a road bike with
a competitive edge in todays high-tech carbon road bike
market? The answer is not just a single feat of
engineering, but many.
The EMX-7 is the top of the range Merckx, and it spares
no expense in delivering power. The frame has all of the
modern over-sized junctions. The headtube tapers from 1
and 1/8th" to 1 and 1/2" with a special aerodynamic
blending of the fork crown into the frame. The Bottom
Bracket is the BB86 standard, allowing for wider bracing
of the crankset, and exceptionally large tube junctions.
Perhaps the most compelling feature of the EMX-7 is the
special carbon fiber used in it's construction. There
are two magical materials at work, 62 ton per square
millimeter carbon fiber with a 1K weave finish, and
carbon Pitch fibers. Pitch fibers are fundamentally
different from the Pan fibers found in all other carbon
road bikes, and are the stiffest fibers found on any
production bicycle. The EMX-7 uses Pitch fibers in both
the headtube and bottom bracket areas for increased
power transfer. The EMX-7 has been engineered with the
wind in mind as well, featuring an aero-shape seat tube
and seat mast. Internal cable routing keeps a clean look
and adds a smaller aero benefit.
With all of these advanced features, one may forget the
key benefit of a Merckx frame, legendary ride quality.
Eddy wants all of his frames to invoke confidence, and
accomplishes this with a longer trail measurement for
increased stability. Ask any Merckx owner what they love
about their bike, and high speed handling is always near
the top of the list. The Merckx EMX-7; excellent finish,
limited lifetime warranty (frame registration required)
and performance beyond all others.
This anniversary bike is a tribute to the 525 victories and successes that Eddy Merckx has had over the years and each major race win has been recorded on the special Lightweight carbon fiber wheels for posterity.
A collector's edition hardcover book will be shipped after registration is completed to all EMX-7 bike and frame owners. This large format book features beautifully printed photographs documenting the life and career of Eddy Merckx and his extraordinary achievement of 525 victories. The photos capture many rarely seen moments of the most accomplished rider that cycling has ever known.
