2017 Colnago V1-r
If you’ve read that the V1-r is Colnago’s first aero bike, then there is the danger that you’re already getting all hot and bothered about it not looking very “aero” like an Aeroad or Foil. Well, you can relax because the V1-r is the perfect example of Italian design language mating happily with techy advancements to create a responsive, comfortable bike that cuts through the type of real world breezy situations that we are all likely to encounter every ride.
Colnago has joined forces once again with the engineers from Ferrari. This isn’t just about a flashy paint job; they have taken this bike into the wind tunnel and applied their aerodynamic expertise in order to create a monocoque carbon frame that is aero-optimized and lightweight without sacrificing anything from the rigidity or ride quality. They have used a Kamm Tail shape for the downtube, seat tube, and head tube to reduce drag not only from a head wind, but also for side wind forces. And for Colnago a nice by-product of this tube shape is that lateral rigidity is increased without having to heap on extra layers of carbon. The V1-r’s fork has also received the wind tunnel attention, and has been an aero truncated profile, while the dual pivot direct mounting brakes have been integrated into the fork structure. The steerer tube starts out as 1 1/4 at the base and moves up to 1 1/8 by the top, providing the rigidity needed for precise steering. The fork can also accommodate 28mm tires, which is especially helpful if you like to run modern wider rims, you can keep the whole setup seriously aero and add the comfort inherent in wider tires. The fact that Colnago sticks with alu dropouts for the fork indicates that they aren’t about to compromise durability and longevity for a bit of unnecessary froufrou carbon bling.
The make or break point of every frame is the bottom bracket, since without adequate stiffness you’ll be losing all your power, but make it too stiff and you’ll have a dead, uncomfortable ride feel. If anything, Colnago has a BB fetish. With all the BB “standards” floating around, they took a look and decided none of them were good enough. They also were increasing the cross sections of their down tube and seat tube, so it was important to get the bottom bracket width right. So they use a press fit BB which also incorporates their own ThreadFit82 that uses screw-in alloy cups, which means the increased width of the bottom bracket adds to the overall rigidity of the frame. Aside from eliminating the chance of creaking that press fit bottom brackets often cause, it makes the whole arrangement extremely easy to maintain and clean. Compatible with all the Pressfit 86.5 BB versions, this is a bottom bracket that gives your bike the best of both worlds.
With such a beautiful frame, it would be a shame to have cables and zip ties all over the place, so thankfully all cable routing is internal and compatible both with electric and mechanical groupsets. A special design touch comes with the carbon rear dropouts where the access to the rear derailleur cable has been neatly integrated. And since the frame weighs a very respectable 835 grams, you can count on the V1-r to perform equally well in the high mountains as on the flat windy plains.
The Colnago V1-r is the net result when a brand emphasizes the whole package above any faddish design expectations: you get a bike that handles beautifully and performs effortlessly on every terrain.
