2017 Colnago V1-r Disc
Whatever complaints the pros may have about disc brakes, there is no denying that road bikes with disc brakes are in a position to go fast because they can also stop faster, no matter the weather or road conditions. With the Colnago V1-r Disc, you are getting the top quality monocoque racing frame with the added advantage of disc brake performance.
Modulation is the key to control in braking. Racing down a hill in the rain, you want to be certain that your brakes will grab when you want and with the force you intend. If you have used carbon rimmed wheels in wet conditions, you’ll know how sketchy that braking experience can be. And sure, we can all get used to dealing with it, but isn’t it so much nicer, not to say safer, to have brakes that will work perfectly in all situations. With the V1-r Disc you can kit out your bike to be a super racer that is also practical. For this frame Colnago has joined forces once again with the engineers from Ferrari. This isn’t just about a flashy paint job; they have taken this bike into the wind tunnel and applied their aerodynamic expertise in order to create a monocoque carbon frame that is aero-optimized and lightweight without sacrificing anything from the rigidity or ride quality. They have used a Kamm Tail shape for the downtube, seat tube, and head tube to reduce drag not only from a head wind, but also for side wind forces. And for Colnago a nice by-product of this tube shape is that lateral rigidity is increased without having to heap on extra layers of carbon. The V1-r’s fork has also received the wind tunnel attention, and has been an aero truncated profile. The steerer tube starts out as 1 ¼ at the base and moves up to 1 1/8 by the top, providing the rigidity needed for precise steering. The fork can also accommodate 28mm tires, which is especially helpful if you like to run modern wider rims, you can keep the whole setup seriously aero and add the comfort inherent in wider tires. And to accommodate those front braking forces, the fork comes with a 15mm thru axle which uses the Hex Lock system that locks into the drop out using a twist mount.
The make or break point of every frame is the bottom bracket, since without adequate stiffness you’ll be losing all your power, but make it too stiff and you’ll have a dead, uncomfortable ride feel. If anything, Colnago has a BB fetish. With all the BB “standards” floating around, they took a look at them, and decided none of them were good enough. They also were increasing the cross sections of their down tube and seat tube, so it was important to get the bottom bracket right. So they use a press fit BB which also incorporates their own ThreadFit82 that uses screw-in alloy cups, the increased width of the bottom bracket adds to the overall rigidity of the frame. Aside from eliminating the chance of creaking that press fit bottom brackets often cause, it makes the whole arrangement extremely easy to maintain and clean. Compatible with all the Pressfit 86.5 BB versions, this is a bottom bracket that gives your bike the best of both worlds.
With such a beautiful frame, it would be a shame to have cables and zip ties all over the place, but luckily all cable routing is internal and compatible both with electric and mechanical groupsets. The V1-r Disc's rear mounts are made of carbon fiber that is integrated into the rear dropouts, thus keeping weight down on the lightest frame Colnago has ever made. The post mounts are suited for 140mm rotors.
The Colnago V1-r Disc heeds the call of modernity with a lightweight monocoque disc brake frame made with beauty, style and high performance.
