The technical hallmark of the Colnago C60 is the pioneering of faceted star-shaped tubes and fitted lugs. Featuring increased volume, thinner walls, and dramatically angled tube profiles, the cutting-edge tube system increases frame efficiency and deliberate handling at high speed, while retaining comfort and strength.
Together with an oversized downtube, the faceted tube design translates to outstanding lateral stiffness and a safety rating almost 5 times the European impact testing standard. The frame’s tube/lug miter system enables a wide variety of sloping and traditional top tube framesets, in addition to custom fits according to rider preference. The C60’s innovative design also streamlines Colnago’s promise of in-house replacement of any damaged components.
With the C60, Colnago has strengthened the headtube by reintroducing their famous star shaped tubing and carrying that design into the lugs: rather than adding a round cross section for where the tubes meet the lugs, the star shape is maintained throughout. This provides a stiffer front end while increasing a higher impact resistance. The manufacturing of the headtube requires an impressive amount of precision and the tolerances have to be exact.
Colnago increased the size of the downtube on the C60 compared to the C59. The new downtube is the widest design ever produced by Colnago and is only achievable due to the new bottom bracket design on the C60. Stiffness is improved, but the wall consistency of the tubes is also greatly improved for added weight savings.
The most crucial design aspect of the C60 is the bottom bracket. Like the headtube, Colnago uses their star shaped tubing to increase lateral stiffness and better distribute stress from pedaling forces. They were also able to better control the wall thicknesses of the bottom bracket to reduce weight compared to the C59. While at first glance it might seem like the C60 will almost be too stiff compared to the C59, the result is a better handling bike and the stiffness is only noticed as a positive effect that propels the bike forward in an instant with increased climbing efficiency.
With the wider bottom bracket design comes a new bottom bracket interface. Wanting to combine the reliability of a threaded bottom bracket with the weight savings of a press-fit system, Colnago introduces the ThreadFit 82.5 bottom bracket. The ThreadFit 82.5 adds two removable threaded sleeves to the bottom bracket shell and then allows any press-fit 86.5 bottom bracket to be pressed in. This unique design extends the life of the frame and is an easy system to work on.
All of these advancements has resulted in a frame that stands the test of time and represents the rich history of cycling that Colnago has been apart of for over 60 years. Never sacrificing ride quality, the C60 is one of the most balanced road bikes on the market and is a complete thrill to ride.
