2017 Cipollini NK1K
It’s not uncommon for retired professional cyclists to start their own frame brands, but it is pretty rare for the personality of the former cyclists to appear so immediately and clearly in one of the frames. As far as the Cipollini NK1K is concerned, no one but Super Mario himself could have been the motor behind this design.
Something else that sets this bike apart is that this is an Italian mass production bike actually made in Italy. They are a rare breed these days. But all that aside, this is most importantly a pure racing bike, meant for anyone who loves to attack the pedals all day, every ride. Though the frame does cater to modern preferences for wider tires, making it possible to run up to a 28mm tire with no problem, it really isn’t trying to make any compromises that it doesn’t want to. This is a machine that is begging to be raced, sprinted; it wants to thrash the competition. The monocoque T1000 carbon weave from Torayca results in a super stiff and responsive frame. The tubes have also been shaped in a way to give the NK1K a decidedly aerodynamic silhouette. The aggressive profile is aided by the direct mount brakes which reduce wind turbulence in that aerodynamically problematic spot. The BB386 bottom bracket also plays a big role in keeping the frame immensely stiff and responsive, just what a pure sprinter would really want. The frame has been designed with aero-aware ports for internal cable routing that will accommodate either a mechanical or electronic groupset. It will come with two headset spacer options, one for zero stack height, and one for a 16mm stack height in case you’re not as flexible as you used to be. The seatpost gets some aero love with the tensioning bolt sunken into the top tube and covered with a clever little carbon cover. The seatpost kit allows for micro adjustability of the saddle, with a choice between 0mm and 18mm offset. The seatpost itself has a shape intended to emphasize its aero efficiency, while the seat tube has been shaped to fit very closely with the rear wheel to reduce drag through air turbulence. The flattened top tube increases the stiffness, like it needs it.
Though an unpainted medium size of the frame weighs 1120 grams, quite impressive considering the aero flourishes that inevitably add a touch of mass, you’ll want to take advantage of just how slick the frames look with their very Italian paint jobs. And if you are either a smaller rider or a very tall one, you can take heart in the fact that the Cipollini NK1K comes in seven different sizes, from XXS to XXL. If you are tired of manufacturers ignoring those of us on the outer limits of the size spectrum, this is indeed very good news. So long as you are tall enough to be allowed on an adult roller coaster, you should be able to find a Cipollini that fits you.
If you are looking for a bit of pizazz in your next bike, and want to make sure you get the sort of excess of quality that Italian frames have always represented, then you could hardly do better than a Cipollini NK1K. Outlandish skinsuit not included.
