Turner

Turner Suspension Bicycles was founded in 1993 by Dave Turner. Turner had been a dedicated cross-country rider for nine years, ascending to the Mongoose factory team in 1990. It was during this time that he crossed the technological divide from rigid steel bikes to aluminum full suspension bikes. Turner was there in the beginning when some of the most important principles of suspension theory were first being developed and applied to mountain bikes. His passion for the sport turned to profession in 1992 when he started designing his own frames, and he has been working to create the ultimate trail experience ever since.
Turner went to the industry trade show in the fall of 1993 with a couple frames and has since been trying to meet the continuous demand. In 1994 the Turner catalog consisted of a single, do-everything suspension bike. By 1996 Turner’s downhill specific bike was making waves in the sport and getting a whopping 4.25” of travel. Every single bike they have sold is fully suspended, so it can be accurately stated that Turner and his crew are dedicated to suspension bicycles. Dave Turner has seen design trends come and go but has always stayed focused on what works. They started building their frames in 6061 aluminum alloy and continue that to this day. Also, bucking the trend towards sealed bearing pivots is Turner’s unwavering support of journal bearings, commonly called bushings. The arguments for the journal bearing system are strong and have coupled with Turner Suspension Bicycles’ legendary quality and performance to garner a loyal—almost fanatical—following.
Moving into 2006, Turner has departed from the Horst link design of the past in favor of their proprietary Torque Neutralizing Technology (TNT). Five models will be offered with TNT rear ends: the Nitrous, Flux, Five Spot, RFX (formerly the Six Pack), and High Line. Many die-hard Turner riders were shocked at the abandonment of the tried and true Horst link, yet the alarm appears to be unjustified. Reviews so far have been positive, reporting almost no discernable difference between the ride qualities of the two designs. The illustrious DHR remains unchanged.
With operations once run out of Dave Turner’s house in Eagle, Colorado, Turner Suspension Bicycles is now housed in Murietta, CA where they take advantage of rideable weather year round and a plethora of trails allowing for constant R&D. The fabrication of the frames is done at a facility in Portland, OR that moonlights as a manufacturer of aerospace and aviation dohickeys.
“One of the most important philosophies I have held from the beginning is great customer service,” says Turner. “Job #1 in service is knowing the customer and each models' intended use [so we can] properly design the product for the specific type of riding. I personally talk to customers year round on the phone and on the dirt gathering information about the important features each model of frame will need to have.” From turning wrenches on pit row to walking a DH course to better understand a bike’s set-up needs, Dave Turner understands the benefits gained from first hand knowledge. It’s what separates him from so many others. Turner’s racing legacy means that the bike has a lot of thought put into each design to not only make them perform, but more importantly, to make them last
