"The combination of a great suspension design and a big wheel makes for a ride that borders on, and we're as surprised as anyone that we're saying this, mind blowing; Climbing traction, descending traction and stability are off the charts"

After over a year of testing and tweaking, Niner is proud to introduce the R.I.P. 9. With four and a half inches of pure, unadulterated fun, the R.I.P. 9 will roll through any terrain while keeping you at peace with the trail below.
With years of extensive knowledge and time on various suspension designs, Niner went to work to create the ultimate trail bike. The parameters for Niner's first ever suspension bike were easy: it had to be the best handling, most efficient climbing, most active suspension design on the market, oh, and it had to stay true to Niner's philosophy of geometry. The execution of these parameters proved to be challenging in every way, but Niner wasn't satisfied until the job was done and ALL of the parameters had been met. Born out of those ideals is the all new Niner R.I.P. 9.
To meet these parameters, Niner understood that it wasn't good enough to just copy or license existing suspension designs. While many of them are great designs and work well for the intended use, they all come with their own pro's and con's. In addition, many current suspension designs on the market use "platform" shock valving to mask inefficient suspension designs. Niner's objective was to design a suspension system that didn't require such a mask. Enter Niner's CVA, Constantly Varying Arc, suspension design. This design isolates pedaling forces completely with no pedal induced activation of the suspension system in any gear while maintaining fully active and compliant on everything from small bump chatter to big hit obstacles.
Getting the suspension to work exactly as intended was challenge number one. Getting that design to fit on a frame with Niner's intended geometry was design challenge number two. The rear triangle of any 29" wheel mountain bike is tight, especially if you want clearance for large tires AND a front derailleur. This wouldn't be a problem if Niner was content with 19" chainstays, but Niner's goal was to fit four and a half inches of travel, a front derailleur and room for a meaty rear tire in the shortest possible chainstay configuration. Needless to say, hours and hours were spent looking at every angle in 3D CAD with every possible front derailleur/tire combination we could come up with. In the end, we were able to meet our goals: a chainstay length under 18", no interference with the front derailleur, and plenty of mud clearance for even the widest possible 29er tire.
The R.I.P. 9 is a culmination of a lot of knowledge and a lot of work. Niner delivers on the promise for the "one quiver" suspension frame; efficient, fast, razor sharp handling combined with four and a half inches of active, plush suspension travel to create the perfect all mountain ride. Whether it's an out of bounds excursion, all day epic, or just hitting the local trails, the R.I.P. 9 will put a grin on your face.
