So back in the day (1986), when we were all riding around off-road with hardtails and rigid forks, there was a Honda motocross race mechanic who happened to be located next to a bicycle frame builder in Santa Cruz who built him a mountain bike. It only took one ride and he thought, “Why don’t these things have suspension?” After many hours in his garage, the first suspension fork for mountain bikes was created, and with it a small and revolutionary company we now know as Rock Shox. That guy was Paul Turner, the grandfather of front suspension as we know it today.

Fast-forward thirteen years. It’s now 1999, and Paul is on his own again after selling his stake in Rock Shox. After some soul searching and realizing he is a lifer in the bike industry, he began thinking that frames, forks and other components could be done better. Starting with the frame, he outlined some critical elements he thought needed to be addressed. The wheelpath needed to follow the direction it naturally wanted to go after hitting a bump. There needed to be as few pivots as possible. The center of gravity needed to be as low as possible. The strength-to-weight needed to be maximized. Last but not least, the old saying: keep it simple stupid. Back to the garage he went, and when the doors finally opened the first Mono Link suspension design was created.

The first frame to don the new linkage design was the ML1. This bike was kept under cover because everyone knew if Paul was creating something it was going to be revolutionary. After some testing Paul called his old Rock Shox partner in crime and master builder Frank Vogel. With the two of them going at it, soon came the ML2, 3 and so on. Once they made it to ML6 they knew it was ready for prime time and the ML7 was introduced at Interbike 2000. With good reason it won best new product of the show.

Their mission statement says it all. “Our mission is to create the best products on the market without bending to the convention of ‘the way things are supposed to be.’ Our philosophy is to bust the molds - if they need to be busted.”

At the heart of the ML series of bikes is the Mono Link. This simple but very effective linkage spans the front and rear triangles and harnesses the bottom bracket. Putting the bottom bracket in the Mono Link allows for no pedal induced bobbing and minimal chain growth. While other companies have to use shock technology to keep their suspension designs from bobbing, Maverick’s frame design is what keeps it efficient. Secondly, since the shock is a strut acting as a structural piece of the frame, it provides the highest level of lateral rigidity of any frame we have tested with this level of suspension activity and efficiency.

The patented design of the MonoLink and placement of the pivots results in an up- and rearward wheel path of 15 degrees. This Parallel Path Technology (PPT) follows almost symmetrically the travel of the fork. The effect is a super stable and efficient ride. While climbing technical stuff, the rear wheel moves up, back and out of the way, effectively digging the tire into the ground. When descending steep downhills, the wheel moves up, back, and out of the way, similarly to how your legs move up and behind you when you are descending stairs or skiing downhill. Front and rear working together. Imagine that.
