Look's precision carbon engineering now comes in mountain bike flavor.
One of the biggest Love – Hate relationships in mountain biking is the hard tail and it’s stiffness. Look set out to create a lightweight hard tail mountain bike that all can fall in love with. The 986 is built using a variety of highly confidential in house processes to shape it’s massive carbon fiber tubes. They then use a pretty standard tube to tube adhesion process and seriously over build the stress point junctions such as the bottom bracket shell and it’s intersection to the down tube, seat mast and chain stays. The head tube and its reinforced connections to the top and down tube are twice to three times as thick as Look’s carbon competitors. The 986’s highly shaped front triangle tubing keeps the bikes lateral stiffness very high. The rear stays are shaped to achieve maximum comfort with out sacrificing the bikes pedaling performance. The stays change their contour as they extend back from the front triangle. Chain stays become a third of their height and increase in width by about a third at the point where the stays pass the rim of the rear wheel. The chain stays continue and become taller again as they intersect the aluminum rear drop outs which are a tube in lug design. Adding the wide hour glass shaped seat stays to this rear end makes for a performance tuned rear end that eats up and spits out all accelerations. Just incase you’re not feeling the Love, the integrated seat mast and R.5 E-Post combine with the rest of the frame to maintain the frame’s sweet spot of vertical compliance and lateral stiffness. Just incase that sweet spot needs adjustment, the rider can replace the E-Post’s expanding rubber elastomers for a stiffer or more cushioned ride quality. The already awesome pedaling frame now becomes tunable for increased rider comfort and performance.
All this in one stunningly elegant package makes for a very special hard tail and for most folks, love at first sight.
