Merckx has always utilized the highest end materials available, including Easton, Dedacciai and Columbus. His latest flagship model capitalizes on the latest Italian composites and manufacturing, a supplier to Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Ducati, to bring you a ride compliant enough for Belgian cobbles and steely enough for the ProTours most powerful sprinters and climbers.
The full carbon monocoque frame is hand formed in one piece, from over 110 layers, then cured in an autoclave at 180 degrees C, under 6 Atmospheres pressure.
The choice of fibers employed in the lamination of the frame are drived from careful studies that indicate which fibers to use in the different areas of the frame. This research ensures that the frame will have the ride characteristics that Eddy Merckx demands of his bicycles. All the fibers are preimpregnated with epoxy resins derived from the aerospace industry. This guarantees that every cubic centimeter of material has the same resin content, the same weight and identical chemical composition.
T700 Tenax, with a tensile strength of 49.5 tons and tensile modulus of 21 tons per square centimeter, and UTS Tenax fibers, with a tensile strength of 48.3 tons and tensile modulus of 25 tons per square centimeter, are used for strength rigidity and elasticity. K210 aramid and titanium mesh are used for their damping properties. The top T300 Tenax layer enhances the aesthetic, continuous surface, while protecting the functional nature of such a finely crafted instrument. These materials are all of several types depending on their positioning within the frame. These vary among plain, balanced, unidirectional, twill and bi-axial.
Merckx has developed a high modulus, full carbon fork with Easton. Easton provides the mastery of materials and construction, balancing strength, weight and, “intelligent flexibility,” while Merckx provides his definition of geometry, a marriage of ride quality, efficiency, reliability and light weight.
Merckx bicycles are a great all around experience. The EXM is the highest end sloping, or compact, frameset, providing compliance and light weight. This is a big complement to the legendary Merckx ride, a great century bike which climbs well and handles extremely well under high speeds. Tough bikes for tough riders by one tough guy, a guy they call, "the Cannibal!"
The light, compact frame geometry is available in five sizes, (often) fit by top tube. Frame includes, seatpost, seatpost clamp, and fork (1 1/8” headset available separately.) Frame requires Italian BB and 35mm front derailleur.
